About the project

The Global Initiative on the Future of the Internet (GIFI) is an EU-funded initiative that advances an open, secure, inclusive and human-centred internet.

GIFI supports the implementation of the global digital commitments by helping translate them into practical policies, informing public debate and supporting meaningful action. We work with governments, civil society, the technical community, academia and the private sector to strengthen the conditions for an internet that is open, global, interoperable, reliable and secure.

What GIFI does

GIFI connects global commitments with national and regional realities. It provides research, tools and spaces for dialogue that help stakeholders understand challenges, learn from experience and advance practical solutions.

Our work focuses on three connected areas:

Policy support

We identify emerging challenges, examine policy approaches and share good practices that can help decision-makers advance a more open and accountable internet.

Multistakeholder dialogue

GIFI convenes policymakers, civil-society organisations, researchers, technical experts and businesses to exchange perspectives, build understanding and develop more inclusive responses to shared digital challenges.

Outreach and public engagement

GIFI makes research and policy debates accessible to wider audiences through practical resources, interactive tools and public communication. These include the Internet Accountability Compass, interactive stories on the Open Internet, publications and multimedia resources.

Why it matters

An open internet supports democratic participation, innovation, social connection and economic opportunity. Protecting it requires continued cooperation across borders and sectors, as well as accountability for the policies and decisions that shape people’s online experience.
