Domestic workers are now part of the lives of many families in Europe, providing care for elderly, children or disabled loved ones. Yet, behind closed doors of private homes, trafficking for labour exploitation of domestic workers occurs in Europe. Often taking place at the margins of labour law, domestic work mostly involves migrant women, in many cases with irregular migrant status, which make them particularly vulnerable to exploitation. 

What are the circumstances under which severe forms of exploitation and trafficking occur in domestic work? How gaps and pitfalls in policies and laws (labour, migration, welfare) might foster conditions leading to exploitation?

The Workshop on Trafficking for Labour Exploitation in Domestic Work aimed to critically assess the forms that trafficking can take in the domestic work sector and the policy responses in Italy and six other European countries (Belgium, Cyprus, France, Greece, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom).
