The Global Governance Programme focuses its research on seven broad interdisciplinary themes and on the many cross-cutting issues related to globalisation:

Under each research area a number of projects are carried out.

In January 2018 the European, Transnational and Global Governance research area, directed by Brigid Laffan, has merged into the new European Governance and Politics Programme (EGPP).

From October 2012 until July 2019 the programme hosted the Cultural Pluralism research area and from 2019 until 2022 — the Forms and Dynamics of Global Governance research area.
