Biography
Dr Pugliese is Lecturer in Strategic Communications at King’s College London and the Director of the EU-Asia Project at the European University Institute. He specialises in the international politics of the Asia-Pacific with a focus on Japan, China and the United States. He has presented and published on academic, policy-oriented and commercial themes, including in International Affairs, The Australian Journal of International Affairs, The Asia-Pacific Journal, East Asian Policy, Pacific Affairs, The Pacific Review, Defence Strategic Communications. He is a regular contributor to Asia Maior, Italy’s leading journal on contemporary Asian affairs, and author of Sino-Japanese Power Politics: Might, Money and Minds (Palgrave MacMillan, 2017, also available in Korean).
Dr Pugliese earned a Laurea (B.A.) in Political Science and East Asian Studies at the University of Naples, “L’Orientale” (cum laude), an M.A. in International Economics and International Relations (concentrating on East Asian Studies) at the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), Johns Hopkins University, graduating with Honors and passing the final exam with Distinction. He completed his Ph.D. at the University of Cambridge. He was a Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter at the Department of Chinese Studies in Heidelberg University, a Lecturer in War Studies at King’s College London, a Lecturer in Japanese Politics at the University of Oxford, and a recipient of a British Academy post-doctoral fellowship. He has held visiting scholar positions at GRIPS, Johns Hopkins University SAIS, and George Washington University. In 2023, he was awarded the Nakasone Incentive Award for his research on Japanese diplomacy.
As Director of the EU-Asia Project, Dr Giulio Pugliese, has undertaken the following activities over 2021-24 at EUI:
- Devised and convening of an MA module on Statecraft and the International Relations of the Asia-Pacific for the School of Transnational Governance. Devised and convening of a hybrid MA seminar-based module on the Strategic Communications of the Asia-Pacific (Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies & Ca’ Foscari University).
- Fund-raising and organization of policy workshops/Track 1.5 dialogues (listed in Dr Giulio Pugliese’s CV under the Professional Service category).
- Commissioner and editor of 75+ EUI Policy Briefs/Papers under the auspices of the EU-Asia Project, Global Governance Programme. Papers commissioned, proof-read and edited include authors from the Europea Japan Advanced Research Network.
