Biography

Christian Kreuder-Sonnen is a Junior Professor of Political Science and International Organizations at Friedrich Schiller University Jena. He received his PhD in International Relations from Free University Berlin, worked at the WZB Berlin Social Science Center as a postdoctoral research fellow, and held prior visiting positions at Harvard (Center for European Studies) and Oxford University (Nuffield College).

Christian’s research encompasses various themes related to political authority in global governance. A particular focus lies on the crisis politics of international organisations. His book Emergency Powers of International Organizations (Oxford University Press, 2019) was awarded the 2020 Chadwick Alger Prize by the International Studies Association for best book on the subject of international organisations and multilateralism. His research also appeared in outlets such as the European Journal of International Relations (EJIR), International Theory (IT), or the Journal of European Public Policy (JEPP).

At the Robert Schuman Centre, Christian will work on a project entitled ‘Transboundary crises and global governance capacity’ which seeks to assess comparatively the effects of various types of contemporary crises on international organisations’ ability to provide information, incentivise cooperation, and guide member state behavior.
