Starting from a simple but provocative premise, that established models of citizenship no longer allow us to fully see what is happening on the ground, in this workshop we will ask what may be missing in current engagement with citizenship.

How might new analytical frameworks better capture emerging civic realities?

Moving beyond 'normal science', participants will explore citizenship not only as a legal-political status, but as lived practices, relationships, and claims, often originating 'from the outside', including among long-resident non-citizens.

The workshop will engage questions of integration, rights-making, and membership. We will also consider the impact of polarisation, authoritarianism, geopolitical conflict, and large-scale migration. Presentations are conceived as short, focused pitches, 10–12 minutes each, designed to surface what current scholarship may fail to explain, and to help set a new agenda for the study of citizenship.

In this workshop, we will also explore the development of an embryonic Citizenship Lab. Discussions will extend to the audience, engaging participants in this critical debate for democracy, politics, civic society, and international politics.

At the EUI and the Robert Schuman Centre, we are dedicated to removing barriers and providing equal opportunities for everyone. Please indicate in the registration form your accessibility needs, if any. Alternatively, you can contact the logistics organiser of the event.
