The state of citizenship in Wider Europe: a knowledge exchange
GLOBALCIT capacity-building workshop
When
13 November 2025
09:00 - 18:00 CET
Where
University of Warsaw
This workshop will see new and experienced country experts on citizenship from Central, South-eastern, and Southern Europe exchanging best practices and common issues faced in their role.
What is the impact of legal, demographic and political developments on the regulation of citizenship in EU member states and candidate countries? In the wake of historical EU enlargements, scholars speculated about convergence in citizenship policies towards a more immigrant-friendly model among post-authoritarian states from Eastern and Southern Europe with putatively ethnic traditions that prioritized diaspora ties over newcomers’ integration.
This one-day workshop is envisaged as a knowledge exchange among established and new country rapporteurs of the Global Citizenship Observatory from countries in Central, South-eastern and Southern Europe. Experienced country rapporteurs will share their insights with early career scholars from the Widening Europe countries. The programme will address challenges typically faced by citizenship policy observers regarding data collection, analysis, producing country reports, and providing input for comparative databases. The workshop will prepare a new generation of country experts to contribute to independent and fact-based data collection and analysis of developments in citizenship law in the Widening Europe countries.
By invitation only.
This activity is co-funded by the EUI Widening Europe Programme. The EUI Widening Europe Programme, backed by contributions from the European Union and EUI Contracting States, is designed to strengthen internationalisation, competitiveness, and quality in research in Widening countries, and thus foster a more cohesive European Higher Education and Research area.
