Join this conference to discuss with experts and policymakers current and future security dynamics amid areas with escalating geopolitical tensions.
The return of full-scale inter-state war in Europe – epitomised by Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine – and a worsening security environment in East Asia and Europe and its surroundings, has hastened the crystallisation of competitive political blocs and the inter-linkage of the two theatres. Yet, under the new Trump administration the potential for a US rebalancing towards Asia, hence of a progressive disengagement from Europe, may dictate Europe’s increased attention to its near abroad.
In light of these developments, this workshop addresses: a) the big questions underpinning the assumption of the indivisibility of security in the Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific, first and foremost on the evolving views and policies in Italy, Europe and Japan on Russia and China – and on US-China, and China-Russia relations; b) the (geo)political and economic drivers facilitating, or acting as obstacles, of security contributions in the respective theatres; c) concrete proposals for fruitful security collaboration, one that factors in the aforementioned views on the nature of the challenges ahead, and on the drivers and constraints.
The workshop will focus on major powers, their capabilities and behaviour, underpinning arguments in favour or against the indivisibility of security in the Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific.
N.B. Day 2 of this event (2 December) will be recorded.
