Preventing Violent Extremism and Radicalisation: Indicators for Good Governance @ European Committee of the Regions (Room JDE 53)
Apr 3 @ 8:30 am – 1:00 pm

Europe has grown increasingly polarised in recent years. This polarisation has expressed itself most vividly through a rise in violent extremism attributed to religion and ideology. Significant efforts have been made to address these developments at different policy levels (local, national,

European) and within different policy sectors (security, welfare, education and media). Policymakers are struggling to identify the root causes of polarisation, prevent violent radicalisation and extremism, and find better ways to govern cultural and religious diversity. Three EU-funded research projects – GREASE, BRaVE (both Horizon 2020) and BRIDGE (ISF-P) – have produced different but complementary sets of indicators that can help us monitor and assess how well different types of policies and practices are performing.

  • The GREASE indicators focus on the governance of religious diversity with a view to preventing religiously inspired radicalisation in Europe, the MENA region, South and Southeast Asia and Australia. They are based on expert qualitative assessments.
  • The BRaVE indicators show how polarised or resilient a given country is. Looking at both empirical evidence and perceptions, BRaVE uses data already available in different surveys and other statistical sources.
  • The BRIDGE indicators support local authorities in assessing and mitigating polarisation processes at the municipal level, aiming to improve the capacity of local authorities to monitor and prevent.
