This Executive Training Seminar brings together scholars and policy analysts from Europe, India and the United States to unpick the domestic and regional dynamics underlying India’s increasingly manifest profile as a rising power. Over three days of hands-on learning in an intimate setting, participants will engage in intensive discussions on the complex socio-political, regional and economic topography of India, as well as on the changing contours of Delhi’s foreign policy. As India gears up for the 2019 general elections, what themes will dominate the national conversation? How resilient and sustainable is the current growth level, and to what extent can it be attributed to Prime Minister Modi’s “Gujarat model”? Can simmering communal tensions and pervasive Hindu nationalism be reconciled with a “one world family” foreign policy narrative, and the claim of India’s democratic diversity as a linchpin in an unstable world?

In pursuit of a learning experience that generates actionable knowledge for participants, the Executive Training Seminar then culminates in a half-day scenario-building exercise. Participants are led to identify and assess relevant macro-variables, isolating mega trends and critical uncertainties in order to articulate alternative “futures” and discuss appropriate policies to steer from the “official future” to the preferred scenario.

Executive Training Seminars at the Academy of Global Governance are free of charge. Participants are expected, however, to bear the costs of their travel and accommodation themselves. In order to apply for participation, please fill in the application form before 16 September 2018.

For applicants from the LDCs (as defined by the United Nations) there is a limited number of merit-based scholarships available. Please include a motivation letter in your application. Deadline for scholarship requests: 2 September 2018.
