An increasingly important, but still underappreciated, dimension in the relationship between the EU and its Neighbourhood are the activities of transnational party federations, known as ‘Europarties’. While major Europarties establish connections with partners in the Western Balkans and the Eastern Partnership – ostensibly for partisan reasons – their activities have an important strategic dimension as well. This presentation draws on published works that are based on extensive participatory observation from within a major Europarty. Chryssogelos will discuss how Europarty activities complement the EU’s ties with its Neighbourhood, as well as how the logic of partisan engagement may at times conflict with the priorities of EU Neighbourhood Policy. The presentation will touch upon conceptual implications that exist within EU external relations, and it will look at methodological challenges in the study of Europarties, as well as consider normative questions about foreign policy and democracy in the EU’s periphery.
