In July 2020, the university of West Indies and EUI signed a partnership agreement, which foresees collaboration in areas of study and research common to both institutions, with a view to focusing on sustainable development, multilateral trade, gender equality, security, environment and climate change, migration, energy, regional integration processes and transnational governance.

This e-dialogue is the first event between the two institutions and is intended to raise the profile of the partnership across the two campuses and regions, and spark interest in the planned research and training agendas.

COVID-19, being a topical and hugely impactful event in the trade and economic fortunes of both the Caribbean and Europe, has been chosen as theme for this initial dialogue.  The event will provide a forum for information-sharing, comparative analysis and debate of interest to policy-makers, academia, researchers and the general public. Specifically, the main objectives of the webinar are as follows:

  • To identify and explore impact of the pandemic on the Caribbean and European Union economies, including its trade and economic impact;
  • To share lessons learned and best practices with a view to enhancing future trade relations between the two regions.

Chair:

Dr. Jan Yves Remy, Deputy Director of the Shridath Ramphal Centre at UWI

Speakers:

H.E. Joy-Ann Skinner, Ambassador of Barbados to the EU

Bernard Hoekman, Director of the Global Economics Research Area of the Global Governance Programme, Dean of External Relations

Felipe De La Mota, European Union Team Leader for Regional Integration and Trade programmes in the Caribbean

Don Marshall, Director and Senior Research Fellow of the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies, The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus

The event will be broadcasted live on UWItv and on UWItv’s Facebook page.
