Globalcit Lecture on the Citizenship Consequences of Brexit @ Theatre, Badia Fiesolana
Nov 27 @ 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm

This lecture considers some of the implications – in relation to legal status of EU citizens and their families (and UK citizens resident in other Member States) – of the UK’s referendum of 23 June 2016, which resulted in a vote to leave the EU.

The focus is on three main sets of issues: the types of solutions that are being explored by the UK and EU in the context of the withdrawal negotiations under Article 50 TEU to deal with the acquired rights of “free moving” individuals and families; changes to legal status and citizenship laws resulting from Brexit; and the character of the referendum (and the subsequent debates) as an exercise in democracy for the UK.

Jo Shaw, co-Director of GLOBALCIT, holds the Salvesen Chair of European Institutions at the University of Edinburgh. In 2017-2018, she is a EURIAS Fellow at the Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies, working on a number of projects in the field of citizenship, details of which can be found here: https://medium.com/@userjoshaw
