During the 2010 NPT Review Conference, all state parties have agreed to organize in 2012 a conference on the establishment of a Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) Free Zone in the Middle East with all parties to the region. A facilitator has now been named to host that conference in Helsinki. Euratom has often been cited as one possible regional framework that could serve as a model for the Zone. The following conference gathered scholars, practitioners and diplomats from the European Union and the Arab League countries to assess the prospects of the Euratom Treaty approach for the Middle East. This workshop took place over two days at the European University Institute. Participants prepared 25 minutes briefings on Euratom and Arab proposals for a WMD Free Zone in the Middle East, followed by 25 minutes of questions/comments by other participants.

Deliberations followed the Chatham House rules.
