The resilience of Russia’s global outreach: challenges and opportunities
Executive Training Seminar, 11-13 October 2018
in collaboration with the Torino World Affairs Institute (T.wai)
Giovanni Andornino | University of Torino, Torino World Affairs Institute (T.wai) and European University Institute
Giorgia Giovannetti | European University Institute and University of Florence
This Executive Training Seminar brings together scholars and policy analysts from key Russian, European, and American institutions for an intensive programme combining insights into Russia’s current socio-political dynamics, foreign policy, and international political economy.
Over the first two days of activities, participants will be exposed to multiple perspectives on the state of the Russian economy and industrial sector, the political economy of sanctions, the evolution of the official rhetoric of Russia as a civil state with a distinct system of cultural values, and the shifting topography of Russia’s global projection – with a focus on its relations with China, Central Asia, and the Middle East.
In pursuit of a learning experience that generates actionable knowledge for participants, the Executive Training Seminar then culminates in a half-day scenario-building exercise. Participants are led to identify and assess relevant macro-variables – chiefly of a political and economic nature –, isolating mega trends and critical uncertainties in order to articulate alternative “futures” and discuss appropriate policies to steer from the “official future” to the preferred scenario.
