This workshop explores the risks and opportunities associated with the developments in East Asia. An increasingly unreliable US, the rise of an authoritarian China and the recent turbulence in the Korean peninsula have changed the regional and even global posture. We will assess the rapidly changing situation and the implications for the liberal international order in general, with a particular emphasis on Europe-Japan relations, especially in light of the conclusion of the EU and Japan’s Strategic Partnership Agreement in July 2018.

Organisers:

Prof. Brigid Laffan (EUI – Director of the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies)

Prof. Ken Endo (Hokkaido University)
