The conference has dealt with international organisations and their relation to the public and the media since the second half of the 19th Century. It has for the first time brought together scholars working on two currently very ‘hot’ topics in historical research: the history of international organisations (including the EC/EU) and the historical role of the media in international politics. Glenda Sluga from the University of Sydney was our keynote speakers. Prof. Sluga is one of the world’s leading historians of international organisations.

The conference has addressed questions such as: What strategies did international organisations apply to influence media coverage in their favour? How did journalists cover different international organisations and how did they portray them in their reporting? What kind of global standards for journalism did experts in international organisations envision throughout the 20th century? What role did different transnational or global publics play for international organisations? (For details, see the draft programme attached)

The workshop was supported by the EUI’s Global Governance Programme, the EUI Department of History and Civilization, and the Historical Archives of the EU.
