Several regional organisations across the globe have advocated the granting of rights to the citizens of their member states. EU citizenship often emerges as a paradigm and has also attracted a significant degree of attention, but this should not blur the fact that other organisations have followed a similar path. In Latin America, for instance, the Andean Community, Mercosur, Unasur or the Central American Integration System (SICA) have granted rights comprising freedom of movement and residence, but also political rights (in the election of the respective regional parliaments). In Africa, ECOWAS has adopted similar measures which other regional groupings also have in their agenda.
This executive training seminar discussed the rationale behind the creation of various forms of citizenship that extend beyond the nation state, as well as the difficulties and limitations in the implementation of these rights, and the prospects for future development. The seminar also compared experiences and practices between regional organisations. By bringing together practitioners and academics, and offering a policy-oriented training dimension, this seminar provided the participants with solid foundations for understanding the development of various forms of regional citizenship across the world.

Training courses offered by the Academy of Global Governance are generally free of charge. Admission, though, is granted only on the basis of a successful application. Confirmed participants are expected to bear the costs of their travel and accommodation themselves.
Scholarships
There is a limited number of scholarships available, designed as contribution to the coverage of a participant’s travel and accommodation costs. These scholarships are strictly reserved to people from the least developed countries as defined by the United Nations. Application deadline for scholarships: 6 January 2018.
